Kazhakuttom is a very beautiful place. It is a coastal area and is
15 KM north of Thriuvananthapuram city. It is believed that there were
a number of
Kazhakams here and the group of Kazhakams thus
got the name
Kazhakuttom.The panchayath has been formed in 1953. Kattayikkonam M.K.
Sadhanandan was the first panchayath president.
The enemy group of Maharaja
Marthanda Varama were Ettuveetil Pillas.
The prominent person in the
group was Kazhakkottathu Pillai. He has lived in the Kazhakkoottam
Palace, which still exists.. There is also a family temple of Kazhakkottathu Pillai.
There is a Cave temple called
Madavooppara. It is believed
that Sri Rama had put a
foundation of Sivas idol here.
Sri. Mahadeva Temple here was built
during the age of Marthandavarma Maharaja. It is around 1175 years old and
considered as one of a few Maha temples in Kerala.
There
is much reference about Kazhakkottam in the writings of C.V. Raman Pillai, the novels
Marthanda Varma and Dharma Raja. The armoury of Kazhakkottam pillai was in the place which
is now known as Kalavathoppu.
